The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert to Kannur and Kasargod districts in Kerala today. The alert was issued through a statement issued by the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA).
Orange alerts have been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod on July 1.
An orange alert is indicative of the possibility of very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
The statement also issued yellow alerts for several districts for the coming days.
For July 1, yellow alerts were issued for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikodeand Wayanad.
On July 2, yellow alerts were issued for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod.
on July 3, yellow alerts were issued for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod
On July 4, yellow alerts were issued for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.
A yellow alert is indicative of the possibility of heavy rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
KSDMA advised people living in areas prone to landslides, mudslides, and flash floods, as well as those residing along riverbanks and downstream of dams, to move to safer places if instructed by authorities.
It also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, to stay away from rivers, waterfalls and other water bodies, refrain from crossing flooded areas, and avoid hill stations and other vulnerable locations until the weather improves.
The KSDMA also stated that district people can contact the toll-free emergency numbers 1077 and 1070 of taluk control rooms are functioning round the clock for assistance.
